The aim of this article is to define the status of the form of Circassian that is reportedly spoken by all present-day Ubykh, bptj by the few Ubykh that have retained their original language and by those who have not. It will be argued that Ubykh Circassian (Ubi) should be considered a very early split-off from West Circassian.
